Suspected armed robbers attacked students of the Gateway Polytechnic, Sapaade, Ogun State, killing one identified as Makinde Oluwapelumi and shooting nine others.

The incident occurred around the Larufi area of Ode Remo in the early hours of Saturday, December 2, 2023, a few days after the state police command arrested three of the robbers terrorizing students of the institution.

A resident of the area who pleaded anonymity told Punch that the students even protested at the palace of the traditional ruler of the town, the Alaye of Ode Remo, Oba Amidu Oso, early Saturday morning to register their grievances.

“Yes, I heard that the robbers attacked the students and that while some of them were shot, one of them was killed. The students even held a peaceful protest this morning to show their grievances. I learned that they marched to the palace of Alaye Ode Remo to report the attack,” the source said.

According to one of the students, the gun-wielding hoodlums invaded the students’ hotels around 3 pm and unleashed terror on them

The source added that the attack left one dead and nine others injured including a landlord.

Photos and videos from the scene of the attack show shattered doors, broken windows, and walls riddled with bullet holes.

It was gathered that the robbers used heavy stones to break some windows to force their way into the hotels.

“I heard a gunshot around 3 am and when I woke up this morning, I was told they shot nine students and one landlord. They were taken to the hospital, but one died. They stole a car to escape,” another student said.

A senior lecturer at the polytechnic confirmed the attack by saying six students were shot of which one died.

“According to the story I heard, the guy that was shot (dead) is not our student, he graduated last session hopefully expecting to come back for his HND next session,” the lecturer said.
