Chinese scientists have developed a new water-based battery technology that could challenge the dominance of traditional lithium-ion batteries, potentially reshaping the future of energy storage for everything from electric vehicles to national power grids.
A Safer Alternative to Lithium
The new technology uses water-based electrolytes instead of flammable lithium chemicals, making the batteries significantly safer and more environmentally friendly. Researchers say the electrolyte solution used in the design is non-toxic and comparable in safety to food brine, reducing the risk of overheating or explosions that sometimes affect lithium batteries.
Because water is abundant and inexpensive, the technology could also lower production costs compared to lithium batteries, which rely on rare and increasingly expensive minerals.
Extremely Long Lifespan
One of the most striking features of the breakthrough is durability. Early tests show the water-based battery can survive more than 120,000 charging cycles, potentially lasting decades—far longer than conventional lithium-ion batteries that typically degrade after a few thousand cycles.
Such longevity makes the technology particularly promising for large-scale energy storage, such as stabilising renewable power grids.

Lithium-ion batteries currently power most modern electronics, including smartphones, laptops and electric vehicles. However, they come with several challenges:
