Ghana Football Association has confirmed the appointment of Carlos Queiroz as the new head coach of the national team, the Black Stars, as preparations intensify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The decision was approved by the association’s Executive Council after a series of consultations aimed at securing an experienced manager capable of guiding Ghana through a challenging World Cup campaign. Queiroz is expected to take charge immediately, with only a short window to shape the squad ahead of the tournament.
The Portuguese tactician brings decades of coaching experience at both club and international levels. He has previously managed national teams including Portugal national football team, Iran national football team, Egypt national football team, Qatar national football team, and South Africa national football team, guiding several of them to major international tournaments.
At club level, Queiroz once led Real Madrid and also spent years as assistant coach to Alex Ferguson at Manchester United — experience widely viewed as valuable for a Ghanaian team seeking tactical stability and competitive edge.
The appointment comes with the 2026 FIFA World Cup set to begin on June 11, 2026, across North America. Ghana will open its campaign on June 17 in Toronto, Canada, against Panama national football team, before facing tougher encounters against England national football team and Croatia national football team.
With limited time before kickoff, Queiroz is expected to focus on organizing the squad, strengthening defensive structure, and instilling discipline as Ghana aims to progress deep into the tournament.
