The Federal Government of Nigeria has begun paying outstanding salary arrears owed to members of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors following the implementation of the revised Consolidated Medical Salary Structure.

This development was confirmed by NARD’s Publicity and Social Secretary, Dr Abdulmajid Ibrahim, who informed members that payments covering between one and six months have already started reaching affected doctors.

According to the association, several members have confirmed receiving the funds, marking progress after months of delays that had sparked concern among healthcare workers.

In a statement circulated to members, the association expressed optimism that the process would be completed soon, while urging those yet to receive their payments to remain patient. Ibrahim noted that administrative issues affecting the August component of the arrears may result in a brief delay of up to two weeks.

The arrears stem from the 25/35 review under the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure, a recurring issue that has previously strained relations between doctors and the government. Delays in implementing salary adjustments have often led to warnings of industrial action, with potential disruptions to healthcare services nationwide.

Resident doctors play a critical role in Nigeria’s tertiary health system and have consistently raised concerns about welfare challenges, including unpaid salaries, poor working conditions, and the increasing migration of medical professionals abroad.

Health sector observers say the payment of the arrears could help ease tensions and reduce the risk of labour unrest, while also addressing long-standing grievances within the medical community.

NARD further advised members experiencing unresolved payment issues after the disbursement period to report through their respective hospital leadership for prompt intervention.
