Josephine Okereke, the widow of the newspaper vendor, Ifeanyi Okereke, who was killed by a stray bullet fired by one of the security aides of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has distanced herself from his family’s demand N500 million compensation from Gbajabiamila.

Recall that the family via a letter written by renowned lawyer, Mike Ozekhome (SAN), asked Gbajabiamila to pay them a compensation of N500 million within seven days or face legal action. Ozekhome was given the mandate to write the letter by the father of the deceased, Okorie Okereke; and the younger brother to the deceased, Destiny Okereke.

Josephine, however, granted an interview with newsmen today November 26 where she stated that she was not informed about the demand for compensation. She noted that Gbajabiamila has already promised to take care of the needs of the deceased’s family, especially the education of their children.

Josephine said she was shocked by the family’s demand and is not interested in anything that will jeopardize the promise already made to care for her two children.

Josephine added that she’s more interested in getting justice for her husband, than in any monetary compensation.

“All I want now is that the person that killed my husband to face justice, he was the bread winner of the family and he just secured a job with the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment,” she said.
