“The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, has tested POSITIVE to the Corona Virus,” tweeted Gbenga Omotoso, Lagos’ commissioner for information and strategy.

“He is doing well no symptoms .. will begin 14 days self-isolation & home care immediately… continues to discharge his duty as Deputy Incident Commander,” he added.

With almost 17,900 infections, the commercial capital Lagos remains Nigeria’s hardest-hit city. It is followed by the Federal Capital Territory, which includes the capital Abuja, with almost 5,000 cases, and the southwestern Oyo State with more than 3,000 cases, according to Nigeria Centre for Disease Control figures.

The tally of COVID-19 cases in Nigeria so far is 52,227, with 1,002 deaths and 38,945 recoveries, according to the center.

Since originating in Wuhan, China last December, the pandemic has claimed more than 807,800 lives in 188 countries and regions. The US, Brazil, India and Russia are currently the worst-hit countries.

Over 23.4 million COVID-19 cases have been reported worldwide, with recoveries topping 15 million, according to the US’ Johns Hopkins University.
