Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has reportedly been killed following a wave of coordinated airstrikes carried out by the United States and Israel, according to Israeli security sources. However, Iranian authorities have not officially confirmed his death, leaving uncertainty surrounding the fate of the country’s most powerful figure.
The strikes, which targeted critical military and leadership locations in Tehran, are also believed to have killed several senior Iranian officials. Among those reported dead are Defence Minister Amir Nasirzadeh and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander Mohammad Pakpour, marking one of the most devastating blows to Iran’s military leadership in decades.
Israeli officials cited by regional media claim Khamenei may have died after his compound sustained direct hits during the operation. Satellite images circulating online appear to show severe destruction in areas believed to house key government and leadership offices.
Despite the reports, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stopped short of confirming Khamenei’s death but acknowledged significant losses among top-ranking officials. He stated that Iran had lost some senior commanders but insisted the country’s military structure remained intact.
The airstrikes came amid escalating tensions over Iran’s nuclear programme and its growing influence across the Middle East. In a televised address, US President Donald Trump defended the operation, saying it was aimed at eliminating threats posed by Iran’s military capabilities.
Within hours of the strikes, Iran launched retaliatory missile attacks on Israeli territory and multiple US military bases across the Gulf, including installations in Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates. Several missiles were intercepted, while others caused explosions near key military facilities, including areas close to the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain.
The sudden escalation has heightened fears of a wider regional conflict, with military forces across the Middle East placed on high alert. Diplomatic efforts previously underway to ease tensions now appear to have collapsed.
As speculation grows over the reported death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, global attention remains focused on Tehran, awaiting official confirmation and the potential political consequences of such a historic development.
