Ademola Lookman delivered a crucial moment in Europe on Tuesday night, scoring the decisive goal that helped Atletico Madrid edge past FC Barcelona and book a place in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals.
Although Barcelona secured a 2-1 victory in the second leg at the Metropolitano Stadium, Atletico advanced with a 3-2 aggregate win, thanks largely to Lookman’s first-half strike which ultimately proved decisive.
Barcelona began the encounter aggressively as they sought to overturn their first-leg deficit. Goals from Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres briefly swung the momentum in favour of the visitors, drawing the tie level on aggregate and putting pressure on the hosts.
However, Atletico responded through Lookman, who capitalised on a scoring opportunity to restore his side’s aggregate advantage and calm nerves among the home supporters.
Speaking after the match, the Nigerian forward praised his team’s resilience, noting that facing Barcelona required discipline and composure. He emphasized the squad’s confidence and determination to push deeper into the competition.
Barcelona’s hopes of staging a late comeback suffered a major setback in the 79th minute when Eric Garcia received a red card, reducing the Catalan side to 10 men and making the task even more difficult.
Atletico held firm until the final whistle, sparking celebrations among players, including Julian Alvarez, as Diego Simeone guided his team into the last four of Europe’s premier club competition.
Atletico Madrid now advances to the semi-finals alongside Paris Saint‑Germain, who also secured qualification after eliminating Liverpool FC in another quarter-final clash.
