Israel’s Defence Minister Israel Katz has threatened to target any Iranian leader chosen to succeed Ali Khamenei, following reports that the Supreme Leader was killed in recent U.S.–Israeli strikes on Tehran.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, Katz declared that any successor who continues what he described as Iran’s agenda against Israel and its allies “will be a certain target for assassination, no matter his name or where he hides.”

The warning marks a sharp escalation in rhetoric as tensions between Israel, the United States, and Iran intensify.

Mojtaba Khamenei Emerges as Front-Runner

Attention has shifted to Mojtaba Khamenei, the 56-year-old second son of Ali Khamenei, who is reportedly a leading candidate to assume Iran’s highest office.

According to opposition outlet Iran International, Mojtaba was selected as a preferred candidate by Iran’s Assembly of Experts under pressure from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Profile of Mojtaba Khamenei:

  • Not a senior-ranking cleric

  • Has never held elected office

  • Lacks an official governmental role

  • Served in Iran’s armed forces during the Iran-Iraq War

  • Believed to wield significant behind-the-scenes influence

Despite years of speculation about his succession prospects, reports suggest Ali Khamenei had reservations about his son taking over, as it could resemble hereditary rule akin to the monarchy that was overthrown during Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Political and Regional Implications

Katz’s remarks suggest Israel may adopt a pre-emptive posture toward Iran’s next leadership, raising fears of further military escalation in an already volatile region.

The situation carries significant geopolitical consequences:

  • Increased risk of direct Israel–Iran confrontation

  • Potential retaliatory action by Iranian proxies

  • Heightened tensions across the Middle East

  • Greater uncertainty in global energy markets

With Iran reportedly retaliating against U.S. targets in the Gulf region, analysts warn that leadership uncertainty in Tehran could further destabilise regional security dynamics.

A Turning Point

If confirmed, the death of Ali Khamenei would represent one of the most consequential shifts in Iran’s political structure in decades. Combined with Israel’s explicit threats, the leadership transition could shape the trajectory of Middle Eastern geopolitics for years to come.

The situation remains fluid, with global leaders closely monitoring developments in Tehran and Jerusalem.
